Our Story

Hi,

My name is Marc and I am the proud owner of the SPK (Salt-Pepper-Ketchup) Deli in West Islip.  I love to hear from store and restaurant owners about their personal stories and connection to their community.  So I figured I would give it a go as well.

I grew up in Rockland County, which is surprisingly similar to Long Island.  Years ago, there were more farms, wooded areas, and plenty of places for kids and families to have fun and play outdoors.  Over time, shopping centers and housing developments changed the landscape and the way we organize activities and interact with one another.  Even though there have been lots of changes, I find myself drawn to opportunities where personal relationships and a ‘homey’ vibe are present.

After years working in the restaurant business, I decided to take a leap of faith an open my own place.  I searched for places in Rockland, but nothing felt right.  When visiting my brother on Long Island, I stumbled upon the charm and mall town feel of West Islip.  It just so happened that there was a bar / restaurant (desperately in need of repair) available, and I immediately knew that this is the place for me.  I opened CAFÉ MOJO, just down the road on Higbie Lane (now known as The Lions Den).  I really enjoyed the electric atmosphere and was welcomed with open arms by the West Islip community.  Soon afterwards, I bought a house in West Islip and started a family.  As the children grew older, I knew that the restaurant life took too much time away from my family.  So I gave it up to be a family man, which led me down a twisty road to end up right back in West Islip at SPK.

We all need our down time and ways to recharge.  My therapy involves a heavy dose of ice hockey, mixed with mountain biking, an occasional cocktail, and enjoying a beautiful day at the beach with my kids.  West Islip has given so much to me and my family, and I hope to give back just as much – if not more.  I love to see happy faces and enjoy the banter with customers and fellow townies.  Please make sure to say hello when you come in.  There is always room for more friends!!!
